Be Proud! Be Responsible! (BPBR) and Street Smart are the curriculum chosen for the high school levels.

Be Proud! Be Responsible!

BPBR is generally taught in the 9th or 10th grade in a traditional high school setting. For the most part, it presumes most students have not yet chosen to be sexually active. Even for the minority of students who have been sexually active, the lessons still provide this age of adolescents with the knowledge, motivation and skills they need to change their behaviors in ways that will reduce their risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases as well as preventing unplanned pregnancies.

Street Smart

Street Smart is delivered to youth attending non-traditional or alternative high schools where it is assumed that a higher percentage of students have already been sexually active. It is still a prevention program, however, it’s designed more for runaway and homeless youth between the ages of 11 and 18 years old. Young people are taught to use the skill building activities to help reduce how often they have unprotected sex, the number of sex partners they engage with and to reduce their substance use.

Prevention Strategies

By linking feelings, attitudes and thoughts to their behavior, youth are utilizing a social learning theory to change their behavior. While Street Smart is meant to be conducted in a community-based organization with two 8-hour sessions, the alternative schools in Garfield County have created a stand-alone health class that runs the duration of their grading terms. Unlike the other curricula, Street Smart includes a group visit to a community-based health resource and offers students one individual session with their facilitator.

Lessons address specific goals related to HIV/AIDS, STI’s, pregnancy prevention, coping and negotiation skills, personalized risk behaviors and reducing drug and alcohol use. Role plays, activities and video production exercises are both scripted and unscripted allowing participants to create scenarios that are realistic to the issues they are facing in their lives.

Both Be Proud! Be Responsible! and Street Smart offer each individual the chance to practice proper condom use with a demonstrator or pass. While all of the curriculum have an opt-out option, we encourage all students to remain in the classroom and hear the instruction even if they choose not to participate. While they may not feel it’s relevant to their lives at this time, they can always become a “trusted adult” for their friends and peers.
